Who Is Jahmi Roc?
Born in Kingston, Jamaica and now based in Los Angeles, Jahmi Roc (real name Racquel Bernard) is a self-described freedom singer and scholar-poet who brings her dual worlds of academia and artistry into every lyric. As a PhD candidate in Musicology at UCLA’s Herb Alpert School of Music, her research focuses on how Black women’s reggae reclaims identity and challenges oppression.
Her artistry has earned recognition including the Paul Robeson Award for Performing Arts and Scholarship, and she blends reggae, dancehall, R&B, gospel, and hip hop into vibrant, socially conscious songs that uplift and inspire.
